What do you use a smoker for?

he beekeeper uses a bee smoker to calm the bees while working around the hive or performing an inspection. It is believed that the smoke from the device sends a signal to the bees, prompting them to eat as much honey as possible in case of fire and thus having to abandon their home. The idea is that when they are busy consuming, it gives the beekeeper time for their work around them without having to worry about being stung.

The smoker is one of the most important tools used by beekeepers. It has a fire chamber that needs to be filled with a material like wood shavings or dried grass, then lit to create smoke which can be released into the hive through squeezing its bellows. This smoking will help the bees remain calm and make it easier for check-ups and management activities in their colony while disturbing them as little as possible.

How Does using a smoker affect honey  bees?

Smoke causes bees to prepare to abandon their hive because they think it is on fire. In an effort to be ready for the move, they gorge themselves with honey, providing them with a substantial energy source. This ingestion can cause the bee’s abdomens to become so full that their ability to sting is compromised – a feeling much akin to how incorrect bending down after overeating might feel uncomfortable!
